Weight Loss after Giving Birth

Every woman would want to return to her old weight after giving birth. Losing baby weight is not just about returning to old body weight and fitting the old clothes but is equally important for long-term health for new moms. However, for many women losing baby weight is much easier said than done.

Women losing weight of around 1 to 7 pounds after giving birth is averagely a lot harder than others who hold on to a lot more weight. During this vulnerable time, taking the time to identify and understand the factors that can hinder weight loss is very important.

Hindering Factors on Weight Loss

It is always the problem of new moms to lose weight right after giving birth. Gaining more weight during pregnancy is a lot harder to lose afterwards. It can be even more difficult if new moms are deskbound and are not supported by husband, friends and family.

Losing baby weight is important if new moms would not want to risk gaining more weight later on in life. A study has shown that those who have not lost their baby weight a year after giving birth are more likely to overweight 15 years later.

Factors Promoting Weight Loss

One of the most ideal factors that promote weight loss in new moms is the maintenance of a healthy weight prior to pregnancy. Following the recommended 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy and being physically active help promote weight loss.

Regular exercise is particularly helpful in losing baby weight and keeping it off. It is also beneficial to follow a structured weight loss program. There has been a study conducted that those overweight women who participated in the program have lost more than 15 pounds than those women who tried to loss weight on their own lost nothing.

Good news is being a new mom increases the motivation to try to improve health both for the baby and for herself which also boosts the effort to loss weight. It is always best to follow a healthy lifestyle because it is important in losing weight. Breastfeeding and weight loss have been linked and as many believe is a great contributing factor in weight loss. Yes, breastfeeding may have numerous benefits but helping lose weight is still unclear.

Losing weight and baby weight at that is a challenge in itself and is understandably difficult. It can be helped however by not gaining too much weight during pregnancy, by getting plenty of exercise and by making wise food choices.
