Although there is anecdotal evidence that indicates that low carbohydrate diets can help eliminate fat, some of this strong evidence has caused controversy between nutrition gurus, and their safety has been challenged.

Most of the unpleasant side-effects stated, such as tiredness, bowel disorders, or headaches seem to pass quickly, but critics contend that low carb diets are not without serious long term side effects.

Eliminating carbs could mean missing out on necessary nutrients from healthy foods which must be part of any well adjusted diet, specifically those that we get from vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

Higher consumption of animal-based products could lead into high consumption of saturated fat and cholesterol, which some authorities believe will increase the risk of coronary disease.

Scientific studies over the last few years have proved that eating too much animal fat can cause higher chance of cancer, coronary disease and other serious illnesses.

Moreover, it has been suggested that the kidneys can be given too much work to do and that the consequential change in blood acid levels can lead to bone damage, but some of the scientifc research trying to test the theory have failed to find significant evidence of damaged kidneys or bone damage.

Finally, one point that is usually overlooked, it is damned hard (although by no means impossible) for vegetarians to take up a reduced carb diet.
